Dematerialized payment methods are becoming increasingly popular with French consumers. In addition to the traditional bank card, new dematerialized payment solutions have emerged, offering a host of advantages for in-store payments. Find out more about these new methods and how to implement them in your physical store.
The various e-payment methods
Although these payment methods are not new, they are improving and diversifying over time. Here's a closer look at the main dematerialized payment methods.
Payment by credit card
Paying by credit card is the oldest dematerialized payment solution. Simple to use, you simply insert your card into an electronic payment terminal (TPE). Bankcards can be used to pay for purchases in shops equipped with payment terminals, or to withdraw cash from ATMs.
Contactless payment (NFC)
As its name suggests, contactless payment (NFC) is a device that enables you to pay for your purchases without having to insert your credit card into an EFTPOS terminal. It's a real time-saver and a more hygienic solution, preventing customers and vendors from exchanging cards or payment terminals. It also avoids the risk of abandoned purchases during payment, if the minimum purchase amount imposed by the bank card is not reached.
A new digital technology has been added to enhance security: the biometric card, which combines contactless technology with fingerprint verification.
Mobile payment
By simply connecting your bank card to your cell phone, you can make a large number of online payments. In 2019, 108.8 billion transactions were made via this payment method. 19% of French people are already using mobile payment by 2022, and this figure could grow rapidly thanks to the evolution of payment solutions on cell phones.
Online payment
Accounting for half of all international payments made since 2022, online payment is the most widely used solution of all. Indeed, with the rise of online commerce, which now concerns the majority of convenience stores, consumers regularly make online purchases.
In addition, a secure online payment system, 3D Secure, created by Visa and MasterCard, was introduced in France in 2008. This authentication procedure ensures that it is indeed the cardholder who is making the payment on the Internet. How it works is simple: a payment link is sent by e-mail or SMS to a customer, so that he or she can validate the transaction remotely.
The advantages of electronic payments
Launched several decades ago with the arrival of the bank card, the trend today is more than ever towards dematerialized payments. Convenient, secure and fast, dematerialized payment methods are now widely used, thanks to their many benefits for both seller and buyer.
There are three major advantages:
- Great flexibility: you can use dematerialized payment anywhere, anytime. This solution is particularly well-suited to the fast-growing e-commerce sector.
- Considerable time savings: in e-commerce, it saves time, since only one click is needed.
- Considerable security against hacking attempts (cybersecurity).
